  • 76% of UK Suicides are Male – Why?
    19:30 -21:30

    Marie-Clare Mendham, Consultant Psychologist

Over three out of four suicides are by men, with it being the biggest cause of death for men under the age of thirty five. 12.5% of men in the UK are suffering from on of the common mental health disorders and are nearly three times more likely than women to become alcohol dependent and use illegal drugs. Despite this men are still less likely to access psychological therapies than women.

Whilst there is still considerable debate about the true level of common mental health disorders in men and whether large numbers of men may be under-diagnosed, in this talk we shall aim to look at the reasons behind why men do not access mental health services and more importantly why they continue to have the highest level of suicide rates.

Marie-Clare is going to be joined by a service user for this talk providing real insight into the myths and challenges that men go through in admitting they have a mental illness and seeking access to treatment.
