Speaking Out about Mental Health

We agree that it’s vital that when people do speak out, they get the right help and support at the right time. However a major disincentive to speaking out can be uncertainty over what help can be offered by the NHS. Taking some time off work may temporarily reduce stress but it won’t cure mental illness.

Available Help

Currently the NHS adult mental health services are focused on treating patients with severe mental illness who pose significant risk to themselves or others. It is possible to be severely impaired and distressed by mental illness and unable to work or function as normal and still not get the help you need from the NHS if they feel there is no immediate risk.

Private Services

Private mental health services can bridge this gap. Some employers in the private sector may fund health insurance policies for their workers to help with this. Self pay services are available with no waiting lists to contend with.
