    Social Media and Mental Health

    Dr Ann Fitzgerald, Counselling Psychologist

Adolescent mental health is a major concern for services, GPs, schools and community organisations with many reporting significant increases in adolescents presenting with severe distress. Central to the debate is the impact of technology, screen use, the internet and social media on adolescent mental health. Recent research states that ‘evidence suggests social media use is associated with mental health in young people , but underlying processes are not well understood’. The Chief Medical Officers have just published screen-based activities guidelines encouraging that all concerned take a precautionary approach despite no causal effect being currently evident. Every week there are reports in the media about the need to regulate social media companies etc.

The purpose of this talk is to create awareness of the need for professionals to consider adolescent social media usage as a central factor in understanding contributing factors to mental health problems.
